The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced a detailed scoring framework to guide teacher promotions for the 2026/27 financial year. The system evaluates candidates on multiple criteria to ensure fairness and meritocracy.

Key Promotion Criteria

  • Experience in Current Grade: For senior roles like Chief Principal and Senior Principal, teachers with eight or more years in their grade can earn up to 45 marks, while those with three years receive 20 marks.
  • Academic Qualifications: Up to 5 marks are awarded based on educational credentials.
  • Professional Assignments: Participation in programs by KNEC, KICD, CBC, CEMASTEA, and TSC can add 5 marks.
  • Performance Appraisal: Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) scores over the last three years contribute up to 10 marks, with full marks for scores above 81%.
  • Age: Senior positions consider age, awarding up to 30 marks to those aged 57 and above.
  • Acting Experience: For deputy principals, senior masters, and similar roles, acting experience combined with time in grade can yield between 50 to 55 marks.

Application and Selection Process

Teachers must have served a minimum of three years in their current grade to be eligible, including re-employed teachers who need continuous service. Applications are to be submitted exclusively via the Teachers Online Services platform within 14 days of job adverts.

Shortlisting will follow a 3:1 applicant-to-position ratio. Interview notifications will be given at least seven days in advance. Interviews for primary school teachers will be conducted at sub-county level, post-primary teachers at county level, and senior education administrators at the regional level.

Final appointments will consider interview results alongside factors such as gender balance, disability inclusion, and regional representation.

Anti-Corruption Measures

TSC cautioned teachers against engaging brokers or paying for promotion favors, emphasizing that the process is free. Any form of canvassing will result in automatic disqualification.
