Early Thursday morning, a tragic accident claimed two lives and left 26 others injured when a bus transporting mourners overturned along the Muhoroni-Londiani Highway in Kericho County.
Accident Details
The incident occurred around 4:50 a.m. near a tunnel approximately seven kilometres east of Fort Ternan. The Mercedes bus, registered KDH 181Y and operated by Kupa Kenya Hearse Services, was carrying mourners escorting the body of the late Jayden Kamau to Muhoroni.
Police reports indicate that the driver, identified as 33-year-old Emmanuel Osembo, lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road to the left and rolled once. No other vehicles were involved.
Casualties and Injuries
- Fatalities: Mathew Obiero (36) and Margaret Areyo (21) died at the scene. Their bodies have been taken to St Vincent Morgue for identification and postmortem examination.
- Injuries: Twenty-six survivors sustained various injuries ranging from cuts, bruises, and body pains to more severe trauma such as chest injuries, spinal damage, deep head lacerations, dislocated shoulder, and limb injuries.
- Among the injured were several children, with at least two victims reported unconscious at the time the police filed the report.
Ongoing Response
Authorities responded promptly, securing the scene and towing the bus to Fort Ternan Police Station pending mechanical inspection. Investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash are underway.
