Police at Fort Ternan are investigating a fatal accident that claimed two lives and left 26 people injured on Thursday morning. The incident involved a hearse service bus transporting mourners along the Muhoroni-Londiani road.
The crash occurred around 4:50 a.m. near the tunnel area, approximately seven kilometres east of Fort Ternan. A Mercedes bus, registration KDH 181Y, operated by Kupa Kenya Hearse Services, veered off the road and rolled once while en route to Muhoroni.
The bus was carrying mourners escorting the body of the late Jayden Kamau. The driver, 33-year-old Emmanuel Osembo, reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve left and overturn.
Casualties and Injuries
- Two people died: Mathew Obiero, 36, and Margaret Areyo, 21.
- Twenty-six others sustained injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to serious chest and spinal wounds.
- Among the injured, some were unconscious at the time of reporting, with others suffering deep head cuts, dislocated shoulders, and limb injuries.
- Several children were also affected in the crash.
The deceased were transported to St Vincent Morgue for preservation, identification, and postmortem examination. The crashed vehicle was towed to the police station and is held for further inspection.
Authorities confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
