Two firefighters lost their lives in Crete's Rethymno region while combating rapidly spreading wildfires fueled by gale-force winds. The blaze forced evacuations of multiple villages as it swept through the area.
Southern Europe is currently grappling with a series of intense wildfires amid a fourth summer heatwave. In addition to Crete, fires have erupted across various parts of Greece, including the islands of Paros and Lesbos, as well as the mainland town of Trifylia.
Wildfires Across the Region
- In southern Turkey, fires in Muğla province led to the closure of the main Fethiye-Antalya highway and partial evacuation of a hospital.
- Spain is battling its largest recorded wildfire near Madrid, which has consumed over 43,000 hectares in Ávila province. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the next 12 hours as critical for containment efforts.
- Thousands have been allowed to return home in affected areas around Madrid, Toledo, Ávila, and Castellón after restrictions were lifted.
- In southwestern France’s Gironde region, fires remain stabilised but flare-ups persist amid high temperatures reaching 41°C.
- Portugal’s Vila Real district also faces active fire fronts, with authorities monitoring sensitive infrastructure.
Climate Change Impact
Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these wildfires to climate change, noting Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average. This trend is driving more severe heatwaves, water shortages, and fire risks across the continent.
Authorities continue to deploy firefighting resources and enforce evacuations to protect communities and critical sites, including defence and aerospace facilities in France.
