The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has detained two individuals connected to the killing of Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a prominent mental health researcher, in Nairobi's Upper Hill area.
The arrests come as homicide detectives advance their probe into the fatal shooting that occurred on July 29, 2026. Mutiso, who was the director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), was shot while en route to work at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road.
According to the DCI, the suspects are being lawfully held and interrogated to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the attack, which is believed to have been premeditated. The identities of the detained individuals have not been disclosed to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Witnesses reported that the assailants used both a motorcycle and a vehicle to execute the attack, with the vehicle allegedly blocking the victim's taxi before gunfire was directed at it. Despite being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, Mutiso was pronounced dead on arrival.

The DCI has conducted searches at locations linked to the persons of interest, recovering exhibits currently undergoing forensic analysis. Investigators are also examining phone records, witness statements, and other evidence to reconstruct Mutiso's final movements and determine the motive behind the killing.

Dr. Mutiso was widely recognised for her work in youth mental health, substance abuse, and improving access to mental health services in Kenya. Her research extended to vulnerable groups and child and adolescent mental health, earning her respect in the medical and research communities.
