Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended two suspects in connection with the killing of Dr Victoria Mutiso, a prominent mental health researcher.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning near the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road in Nairobi's Upper Hill neighborhood. Dr Mutiso was shot twice in the head during what investigators believe was a premeditated assault.
According to witness accounts, a Toyota Prado was parked at the scene before Dr Mutiso's Uber vehicle arrived and stopped alongside it. Subsequently, a motorcycle carrying three men approached, and one assailant fired at close range before fleeing. The Toyota Prado also quickly left the scene.
The Uber driver rushed Dr Mutiso to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Forensic experts recovered two spent cartridges from the Uber car, which has been secured as critical evidence.
DCI officials have conducted searches at locations linked to persons of interest, seizing items now under forensic examination. The two suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.
Authorities are also analyzing mobile phone data from the victim and the driver to reconstruct events leading up to the shooting.
Dr Mutiso was the director of the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB) and was widely respected for her contributions to mental health research in Kenya.
