The United Kingdom has revised its student and child student visa regulations, introducing exemptions from the upfront proof of funds requirement for nationals of select countries.

African Countries Granted Exemption

Only three African nations—Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia—are exempt from submitting financial evidence at the time of application. However, applicants must still meet the financial eligibility criteria, and UK visa officers may request proof during the process.

Other African countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Egypt, remain obligated to provide detailed financial documentation when applying.

Financial Requirements for Student Visa Applicants

  • Applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses.
  • Living costs are set at £1,171 per month outside London and £1,529 per month within London, capped at nine months.
  • Additional funds of £680 per month per dependant outside London and £845 per month per dependant in London apply for those accompanied by family members.
  • Acceptable sources of funds include government-backed loans, official sponsorship, personal or parental savings held for at least 28 days.
  • Funds from overdrafts, cryptocurrencies, stocks, pensions, or unregulated institutions are not accepted.

Global Exemption Overview

Besides the three African countries, exemptions extend to several other nations such as Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, various European countries, and Gulf states like the UAE and Qatar.

Additional exemptions apply to applicants extending their stay after 12 months in the UK, Student Union Sabbatical Officers, and medical trainees.
