The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a seven-day weather forecast predicting rainfall mainly in parts of Western Kenya and the Rift Valley from August 13 to 20, 2026. Meanwhile, the majority of the country is expected to remain dry during this period.
Rainfall Expected in Select Counties
Counties likely to experience rain include Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kericho, Nyandarua, and Nyeri. These areas are anticipated to receive intermittent showers, providing relief to regions that have remained dry.
Cool and Cloudy Conditions Elsewhere
Several counties such as Nairobi, Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, and Murang’a are forecasted to have periods of cool and cloudy weather. Additional counties like Tharaka-Nithi, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, Marsabit, and Wajir may also experience similar intermittent conditions.
Outlook for the Coming Months
KMD notes that these cool and cloudy spells will not be continuous but rather occur intermittently. Looking ahead, meteorologists warn of potentially heavier and more sustained rainfall starting in September, particularly affecting the North Eastern region and parts of the Coast, where rainfall could exceed long-term averages by up to 20 millimeters.
The forecast aligns with concerns about the upcoming El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to influence weather patterns across Kenya. Rainfall is predicted to increase from October, with above-average precipitation anticipated during the October-November period across most regions.
