National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has cautioned Kenyan political leaders against engaging in tribal politics, emphasizing the need to foster national unity and avoid divisive rhetoric that could undermine the country's hard-won peace.
Addressing a fundraiser for the Olerai Women Community-Based Organisation in Kilgoris, Narok County, Wetang'ula stressed that political competition should not be a platform for ethnic hatred or violence. "Anybody who is talking tribalism is primitive," he said, urging politicians to maintain respect and fair play in their engagements.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the Speaker warned against inflammatory statements that could escalate tensions, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the youth from being exploited in political conflicts. He called on leaders to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect, reminding them that Kenya's diversity is a strength rather than a source of division.
Empowering Women and Youth
Wetang'ula highlighted the critical role of empowering women and young people economically, noting that sustainable national development depends on expanding opportunities for vulnerable groups. He praised the Olerai Women Community-Based Organisation for its efforts in supporting income-generating activities that improve household livelihoods.
"Empowering women with skills, knowledge, and opportunities remains one of the most effective ways to transform lives and strengthen communities," he said.
Cultural Heritage and Economic Growth
The Speaker also commended the Maasai community for preserving their cultural heritage, which he described as a significant asset to Kenya's tourism industry. He cautioned leaders to avoid remarks that could damage the country's image as a peaceful tourist destination, vital for attracting visitors and investment.
Wetang'ula further called for enhanced legal protections for artisanal miners, particularly gold miners in Trans Mara, urging the government to support the sector through appropriate legislation and investment.
Government Development Initiatives
Recognizing ongoing government efforts, Wetang'ula praised President William Ruto's administration for nationwide development projects, including improvements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and subsidized agricultural inputs. He underscored the administration's commitment to equitable growth across Kenya.
Other leaders at the event, including Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli, echoed calls for unity and peaceful coexistence. They emphasized the importance of focusing on policies that promote economic growth and inclusive leadership opportunities for all Kenyans, regardless of ethnic background.
