A 20-year-old first-time mother from Oltorot, Loiyangalani Ward in Marsabit County, delivered quintuplets at Marsabit County Referral Hospital on Monday afternoon, astonishing medical staff who had anticipated only twins based on earlier scans.

The mother gave birth to three boys and two girls through a normal delivery at around 4 PM. The babies were born prematurely, estimated at six to seven months gestation, with individual weights ranging from 840 to 1,000 grams.

Unexpected Delivery

Initial ultrasound scans had indicated the presence of only two babies, making the arrival of five newborns a remarkable event for the hospital team.

Postnatal Care and Condition

All five infants were immediately placed in incubators within the neonatal unit due to their low birth weights. Marsabit County Referral Hospital CEO, Kussu Abduba, confirmed that both the mother and the quintuplets are currently stable and under close medical supervision.

The mother had been attending antenatal care at Oltorot Dispensary throughout her pregnancy and arrived at the hospital early Monday morning before delivering later that day.

Support Appeal

The hospital has provided the family with a mother-baby kit and is appealing to well-wishers to offer additional support to the young mother and her newborns as they require specialised care.
