Rescue operations are underway following the capsizing of the RIDA Mbuyanehanda Ferry on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. Authorities have confirmed the recovery of 13 bodies and the rescue of 67 survivors so far.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the vessel overturned, throwing passengers into the water. Social media videos showed chaotic scenes of people struggling in the lake as rescuers worked to save them.
Passenger Numbers Under Review
Initial reports stated the ferry was carrying 95 people, including 90 passengers and five crew members. However, new information suggests the number could be as high as 120, comprising 108 adults and 12 children. Police investigations indicate that the actual figure may be even greater.
The confirmed carrying capacity of the ferry is 90 passengers plus five crew, raising concerns about possible overloading. Authorities are still verifying the exact number of people on board and working to identify missing individuals.
Ongoing Search and Family Notifications
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) are coordinating the search efforts and have set up a command centre at Mahombe-kombe Primary School to provide medical assistance to survivors. Police continue to contact relatives of those aboard to gather more information.
"More details will be provided as relatives are contacted while the search process continues," the police statement said.
