At least 14 migrants lost their lives after their boat suffered mechanical failure off the coast of Tanzania's Mafia Island, local authorities confirmed on July 25, 2026.
The migrants, originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and the Comoros, were attempting to reach Mayotte, a French overseas department, in search of better economic opportunities.
