During the second term of 2026, a total of 462 students were detained in connection with unrest incidents across various Kenyan schools, Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa disclosed.
Speaking before the National Assembly Education Committee, PS Ololtuaa detailed that the arrests followed coordinated efforts with security agencies such as the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
He explained that the offences committed by the learners included:
- Arson and attempted arson
- Threats and incitement
- Possession of illicit materials
- Vandalism
- Planning of unlawful acts
These disturbances resulted in significant property damage in several schools. Notably, a tragic dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls' Academy on May 28, 2026, claimed 16 lives and injured 79 others. Nine students were arrested in connection with the fire and charged in court.
On July 1, eight students faced murder charges related to the incident, pleading not guilty before High Court Judge Diana Kavedza. One suspect was released due to insufficient evidence.
PS Ololtuaa added that some students were either bonded, remanded, or provided with guidance and counselling as part of the ministry's response to the unrest.
