Adel Taufiq Balala of Nyali Golf and Country Club emerged victorious at the 104th NCBA Kenya Amateur Match Play Championship held at Limuru Country Club. The 27-year-old secured the title by defeating 16-year-old Maahir Patel from Sigona Golf Club with a 3&2 score in Sunday’s final.
This win guarantees Balala a place in the 2027 Magical Kenya Open, marking a significant milestone after an intense four-day competition where he played 125 holes. Balala’s performance demonstrated exceptional endurance and mental focus throughout the tournament.
Balala previously won the Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 2021, making him one of the few golfers to achieve an amateur double in the event’s history.
Key Moments in the Tournament
- Balala’s semifinal match was a close contest against reigning Kenya Amateur Stroke Play champion Jay Sandhu, which he won in extra holes.
- In the final, he comfortably overcame Patel, who had reached the championship after a grueling 21-hole semifinal victory over Junaid Ayaz Manji.
Patel, despite losing the final, expressed pride in his performance, noting the confidence gained from reaching the championship match at just 16 years old.
Kenya Golf Union Chairman Brian Akun praised Balala’s resilience and mental toughness, highlighting the qualities necessary for success in match play formats.
With this victory, Balala rises to sixth place in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship Order of Merit with 499 points. Jay Sandhu maintains the lead with 1,330 points, followed by John Kamais and Elvis Muigua.
