Adidas has issued an apology following the widespread use of pink football boots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The German sportswear giant described the phenomenon as an unintended coincidence.

During a recent press conference addressing the company's quarterly financial results, Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden acknowledged the unusual uniformity in boot colour across different brands. "It was an accident," Gulden remarked, adding, "I think it's a coincidence, and I hope it will not happen again."

Gulden expressed surprise not at the choice of pink itself, but at how multiple competing brands independently selected similar shades. "Pink is a good colour, no doubt. But that we all ended up with the same is strange," he noted.

Industry experts have offered various explanations for the popularity of pink boots during the tournament. Some suggest that the vibrant hue provides better visibility against the green pitch, making the boots stand out to spectators. Additionally, Nike's football footwear product manager Odinga Nimako told The Athletic that some players favour pink as a bold expression of confidence.

Gulden also revealed that boot manufacturers typically do not have insight into rivals' colour strategies before product launches. He speculated that retailers might have intervened to prevent colour clashes but said, "Retailers normally would tell you: 'Hang on a minute, you're all doing the same colour.' But we didn't hear anything. And shame on us, I think no one liked it."
