Somalia is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the delivery of food aid amid a worsening hunger crisis affecting around 6 million people. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) uses AI-powered tools within its HungerMap Live platform to analyze data on food insecurity, climate conditions, market prices, and conflict, enabling timely interventions before situations deteriorate.
AI Tools Guide Aid Distribution
HungerMap Live, launched in 2020 and upgraded in April 2026, integrates predictive AI features that help identify regions at risk of food insecurity. This allows WFP and government agencies to allocate resources more effectively. For example, in Burhakaba District, humanitarian teams used AI insights to provide food assistance to 48,000 people and nutrition support to 3,000 vulnerable women and children ahead of worsening conditions.
Challenges and Impact
Somalia’s food insecurity is driven by repeated climate shocks, including droughts and floods, combined with decades of conflict and reliance on food imports vulnerable to global price fluctuations. Despite the urgent need, WFP can currently reach only about 10% of those affected due to funding gaps, requiring an additional $192 million to scale up operations through January 2027.
Simon Renk, head of vulnerability analysis and mapping at WFP Somalia, emphasized that while AI helps prioritize aid with stronger evidence, it cannot replace the need for increased support. AI tools shorten the time between early warnings and action, potentially saving lives by enabling pre-positioning of assistance.
