Former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has officially joined the Linda Mwananchi Movement, a day after resigning from President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Siaya Governor James Orengo, a key figure in Linda Mwananchi, publicly welcomed Jumwa on July 31, praising her as a veteran politician from the Coast region.
Reasons for Leaving UDA
Jumwa announced her departure from UDA on July 30, explaining that months of reflection, prayer, and consultations with her Kilifi constituents led to her decision. She accused President Ruto of sidelining and humiliating her despite her loyal support during the 2022 presidential campaign.
She described being excluded from government roles and recounted incidents where she was denied access to meetings with the President and ignored when trying to establish direct contact.
"I campaigned fiercely for Ruto, yet I have been chased away from State House and left without a position," Jumwa said. She emphasized that her exit was motivated by conscience and a commitment to democratic principles rather than bitterness.
Next Steps and Political Outlook
While Jumwa has not disclosed which party she intends to join, she hinted at launching a new political platform alongside her Kilifi allies. Her focus on a "collective dream for a better Kilifi" suggests she may be preparing for the 2027 gubernatorial race in Kilifi County.
Jumwa previously served as chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board until her appointment was nullified by the High Court in May 2026. Her defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially given her influence in the coastal region during the last campaigns.
