Former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa officially joined the Linda Mwananchi Movement on July 31, shortly after quitting the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Jumwa cited betrayal and obstruction of her Kilifi gubernatorial ambitions by UDA as reasons for her exit.
Her defection has ignited varied responses among supporters of the Senator Edwin Sifuna-led movement. Some critics argue Jumwa’s prior close ties with President William Ruto, whom the movement opposes, raise questions about her political integrity. They caution that Linda Mwananchi risks compromising its stance by embracing a figure linked to the ruling party.
Speaking from her Malindi home, Jumwa revealed she felt sidelined within UDA despite being a founding member and claimed her repeated attempts to engage President Ruto on her gubernatorial bid were ignored. She also recounted an incident where she was dismissed from a State House meeting with Coast leaders, describing it as humiliating and a factor in her decision to leave the ruling party.
Welcoming Jumwa, Siaya Governor James Orengo hailed her as a significant addition to the opposition's ranks, expressing confidence in the movement’s expanding national support base. However, some politicians and activists expressed disapproval, citing past allegations against Jumwa, including a withdrawn embezzlement case related to Malindi’s Constituency Development Fund.
Public discourse around her defection also highlights broader concerns about integrity and leadership quality within opposition ranks. Journalist Lyne Ngugi emphasized that the 2027 election should focus on candidates’ ability to tackle corruption, uphold constitutional values, and address key national challenges rather than merely uniting against President Ruto.
Jumwa’s entry coincides with recent removals of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi from influential Senate committees, moves widely interpreted as political retaliation linked to their opposition activities and involvement with Linda Mwananchi.
