The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Monday the mutual termination of their contract with national team coach Vladimir Petkovic and his technical team.
Petkovic, 62, who took charge in March 2024 succeeding Djamel Belmadi, led Algeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the country’s return to the tournament after missing out in 2022. Despite this achievement, Algeria's underwhelming performance at the World Cup raised questions about his future.
Algeria finished third in Group J and advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams but were eliminated by Switzerland in the round of 32. Prior to the tournament, Petkovic’s contract had been extended through 2028.
The FAF expressed gratitude to Petkovic and his staff for their professionalism and dedication during their 29 months with the Desert Foxes.
Next Steps for Algeria’s National Team
With less than two years remaining before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria is expected to promptly begin searching for a new head coach. Media reports have identified Nigeria’s coach Eric Chelle and former Tunisia coach Herve Renard as leading candidates for the position.
