On Saturday morning, a passenger boat traveling from Kenya to Zanzibar encountered rough seas and capsized off the Kwale coast. The vessel, MV Siri ya Mafanikio, was en route to Pemba Island carrying 30 passengers and 10 crew members.
The incident occurred approximately 10 miles east of Shimoni in Lunga Lunga Subcounty amid strong winds, powerful currents, and high waves. The boat was struck by heavy tides and began to capsize in deep waters.
Quick response from the Kenya Coast Guard Service and Kenya Navy personnel ensured the rescue of all 40 people on board. They were safely brought ashore at Shimoni Port, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The damaged vessel was towed back to shore for further assessment. Authorities confirmed all passengers and crew are accounted for and investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
