Former Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has paid a touching tribute to her late husband, Khalid Hossain Ahmed, marking five years since his death.

Breaking a months-long silence on social media, Amina shared her reflections on the profound grief she continues to feel since Khalid passed away in July 2021. Her post, published on her X account, was her first since November 2025.

A Tribute of Love and Loss

In her message, Amina expressed the ongoing pain of his absence, writing, "It seems impossible that I have learned to count time without you." She described moments when it feels as though Khalid has just stepped away and will return, highlighting the void left by his departure.

She continued, "Five years have passed since I last held your hand, heard your voice, or laughed with you. Yet there has not been a single day when I have not spoken to you in my heart." The former CS concluded by calling Khalid "our greatest blessing," emphasizing his lasting impact on her life and family.

Remembering Khalid Hossain Ahmed

Khalid died on July 29, 2021, after a brief illness at Karen Hospital in Nairobi. Known for keeping a low profile, he dedicated himself to his family and private business ventures. Following Islamic customs, he was buried the same day at the family home in Lukenya, Machakos County.

The timing of Khalid’s death was particularly poignant, occurring just months after Amina had lost her brother, Esmael Mohammed Jibril, in March 2021. The dual losses deeply affected her, a sentiment she has now shared publicly.

Current Roles

Despite her personal losses, Amina Mohamed remains active in public service. She currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and holds advisory positions with various international organizations including Interpeace, ICIPE, and GWL Voices.
