Former Cabinet Secretary and diplomat Amina Mohamed has penned a moving tribute to her late husband, Khalid Ahmed, marking five years since his death.
In a message titled "A soulmate Khalid, Five Years," Amina opened up about the ongoing pain of living without the man she described as her soulmate and constant source of joy and support.
Despite the passage of time, Amina revealed that the depth of her love and sense of loss remain undiminished. She reflected on how Khalid’s quiet presence lightened burdens and how his unconditional love gave her confidence and comfort throughout their life together.
She wrote, "It seems impossible that I have learned to count time without you. Some days it feels as though you have only just stepped out of the room and will be back any minute, wearing that familiar smile." Yet the reality remains that five years have passed since she last held his hand or heard his voice.
A Legacy of Kindness and Warmth
Amina described Khalid as a man who made everyone he met feel valued, from family and friends to strangers. His genuine interest in others, his ability to remember small details, and his joyful laughter left lasting impressions.
"It wasn't just a laugh; it was an embrace," she said, recalling how his laughter could lighten any atmosphere and bring people together.
Continuing Influence on Family
The former Cabinet Secretary noted that their children carry forward Khalid’s values of kindness, fairness, and compassion. She often finds herself wanting to share stories with him or imagine the advice and humor he would offer.
On grief, Amina reflected that it does not fade but rather life grows around it. She expressed that her love for Khalid has become deeper and more certain over time.
"There is an old belief that we die twice: once when our body leaves this earth, and again when our name is spoken for the last time. If that is true, then you will never truly die," she wrote.
Khalid Ahmed passed away in Nairobi in July 2021 after a brief illness. His memory continues to live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.
