Ann Mathu, once a celebrated beauty queen from Nairobi, has publicly recounted her lifelong struggle with alcoholism and a strategic marriage to an elderly German man during her time abroad.
Early Exposure to Alcohol
Ann's relationship with alcohol began at the tender age of 10, influenced by a family environment where drinking was commonplace. Her father, who battled alcoholism, introduced her to local drinking spots where she first tasted Muratina, a traditional Kikuyu brew.
Family Tragedies and Deepening Addiction
She attributes her addiction partly to genetics, having lost four close relatives—including her father, sister, brother, and niece—to alcohol-related causes. After her father's death, her dependence intensified. A subsequent five-year relationship with a doctor who also struggled with alcohol ended in loss when he passed away and his family claimed his assets.
Life in Germany and a Calculated Marriage
A friend in Germany helped Ann relocate to rebuild her life. While there, she met and married a man in his seventies. Ann candidly admitted that the marriage was motivated by the expectation that she would inherit his wealth after his death. Her brother, despite his own substance abuse issues, supported and even acted as her best man.
However, the plan fell apart when her husband died without leaving a will. Attempts to claim inheritance through the German embassy in Nairobi were unsuccessful, as officials were unaware of his marriage to Ann.
Recovery and Advocacy
Now celebrating 22 years of sobriety, Ann has dedicated herself to helping others recover from substance use disorders. She emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging openness, especially among women facing similar challenges.
"My purpose for going public was to give women hope," she said. "Many in recovery still hide their struggles due to shame and societal stigma."
