Authorities in California apprehended a 38-year-old man found with a firearm and prohibited ammunition near President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes.
The suspect, Jeanine John Taele, was spotted walking across the Trump National Golf Course, taking photos and videos, and seemingly observing security arrangements ahead of Trump’s visit for a Republican fundraising dinner.
The arrest occurred on Sunday afternoon after plainclothes federal agents alerted local law enforcement about a suspicious individual. Upon confrontation, police discovered Taele was wanted in connection to a robbery investigation by the El Segundo Police Department.
Weapons and Ammunition Seized
- Taele carried a concealed pistol loaded with hollow-point ammunition, which is banned in California due to its high lethality.
- He possessed a 16-round magazine exceeding the state's legal limit of 10 rounds.
- His vehicle contained additional loaded magazines and ammunition.
Following the arrest, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the LA County Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau conducted a search of Taele’s Downey residence. They recovered an illegally modified AR platform rifle, a .45 caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, extensive ammunition, and notebooks with concerning content.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation continues with support from the US Secret Service. While no credible threat to the community has been identified, authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and inter-agency cooperation to prevent potential security risks.
Trump’s visit to California is notable as he prepares to address a fundraising event at the golf course and plans to criticize Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 presidential contender. The president will also speak in Las Vegas later this week amid increasing campaign activities ahead of the midterm elections.
Officials have not linked Taele’s actions directly to an attempt on the president’s safety, and no charges related to such an intent have been filed.
