Artcaffé, a leading Kenyan restaurant chain, has announced plans to expand beyond Nairobi with a new outlet in Eldoret set to open before the end of 2026. Further expansion into Mombasa and other coastal towns is scheduled for 2025, reflecting the company’s strategy to meet the evolving tastes of Kenya’s growing middle-income population.
Expansion Driven by Changing Consumer Preferences
Grace Njeru, Head of Markets at Artcaffé, highlighted that the expansion is driven by increasing urbanisation and a rising demand for curated dining environments that offer more than just meals. “Our customers are looking for unique experiences and atmospheres as disposable incomes grow,” Njeru explained.
Kenya’s expanding middle class is fueling a shift in the hospitality sector, with consumers placing greater value on ambience and service quality alongside food offerings.
Menu Innovation and Local Sourcing
In addition to geographic growth, Artcaffé continues to innovate its menu, introducing new seasonal dishes every six months based on customer feedback. The recently launched Winter Mediterranean Menu features flavors inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa, including sharing platters and warm vegetable dishes suited for the season.
To ensure consistency amid supply chain challenges, Artcaffé sources all ingredients locally from Kenyan farmers and suppliers, avoiding imports entirely.
Significance of New Locations
- Eldoret: The new branch will provide access to premium dining options previously scarce in the city.
- Mombasa and Coastal Towns: Expansion here aims to serve both residents and the region’s vibrant tourist market.
Currently, Artcaffé operates over 60 outlets nationwide, up from 47 branches in 2023, marking steady growth since its establishment in 2008.
