At least 25 individuals lost their lives and numerous others sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned close to the coastal town of Boumerdes, east of Algeria’s capital, Algiers, on Friday.
The civil protection department has yet to determine the cause of the accident. Those injured were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical care.
Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the crash site, where emergency workers were on the scene. The bus was found at the bottom of a ravine, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Context of Road Safety in Algeria
- In August last year, a bus crash near Algiers resulted in 18 fatalities.
- Another bus accident in December claimed 14 lives in the southern Bechar region.
- Road safety officials report that in the previous year, traffic accidents caused 3,838 deaths and over 37,000 injuries nationwide.
