In a major security breach, over 50 inmates escaped from Luebo Prison in the Kasai Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo during the night between Thursday and Friday. Officials have described the breakout as a carefully orchestrated operation, raising serious concerns about public safety.
Jean Tshiawuke wa Tshiawuke, the territorial administrator of Luebo, revealed that the inmates did not tamper with the prison's padlocks, suggesting inside assistance may have facilitated the escape. The entire prison was reportedly left empty after the incident, which points to possible collusion with prison staff.
Authorities confirmed that among the escapees are individuals considered dangerous to the public. Additionally, three rifles were taken during the jailbreak, intensifying worries about the potential threat posed by the fugitives.
Security forces have launched an extensive manhunt to recapture the escapees and have urged local residents to report any sightings immediately. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the inmates managed to break out and the extent of internal involvement.
Broader Security Concerns
This jailbreak adds to a series of prison security challenges in the country. Notably, in September 2024, an attempted mass escape at Makala Central Prison resulted in at least 129 deaths. Earlier, in January 2025, over 4,000 prisoners fled from Muzenze Prison in Goma amid conflict between rebel groups and government forces.
Officials emphasize the need for vigilance and have highlighted issues such as overcrowding and inadequate security measures in correctional facilities across the Democratic Republic of Congo.
