An autopsy conducted at Kenyatta National Hospital Mortuary has established that Dr Victoria Mutiso died due to excessive bleeding caused by three gunshot wounds.
The post-mortem examination, carried out on Friday by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor and pathologist Bernard Midia, revealed that the fatal injuries involved two bullets entering the left side of Dr Mutiso's head and exiting on the right side, with additional wounds to her chest.
"The cause of death was severe bleeding from the gunshot wounds, which affected the head and chest," Dr Oduor explained.
Dr Victoria Mutiso, a prominent mental health researcher and director of the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was shot on July 29 while riding in a taxi along Ralph Road in Nairobi's Upper Hill area.
Ongoing Investigation
The forensic findings are expected to play a crucial role in the police investigation as detectives gather ballistic evidence, witness accounts, and electronic data to piece together the circumstances of the shooting and identify all involved parties.
Meanwhile, the investigation has progressed to the judicial system. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), has requested the Milimani Law Courts to extend the detention of former politician Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son, Chris Mulwa, for 30 more days to allow further inquiries.
Investigating officer Corporal Romana Odour informed the court that additional suspects need to be traced, key witness statements recorded, and forensic and electronic evidence analysed to build a comprehensive case.
The court is expected to rule on the detention extension request soon as investigations continue.
