Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has joined Dutch club Ajax on a loan deal for the 2026/27 season, the clubs confirmed on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old German international, who has been with Barcelona since 2014, has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons. After falling behind Joan Garcia as Barcelona's first-choice keeper, Ter Stegen was loaned to Girona in January 2026 but suffered a hamstring injury in his second match, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.
Ter Stegen, who holds a contract with Barcelona until June 2028, has an impressive trophy cabinet including a UEFA Champions League title and seven La Liga championships. Despite his pedigree, he was not selected for Germany's recent World Cup squad.
The move to Ajax offers Ter Stegen an opportunity to regain match fitness and compete at a high level. Ajax released a statement confirming the agreement, highlighting their confidence in the experienced goalkeeper's abilities.
