Bill Oddie, the renowned British wildlife presenter, comedian, and conservation advocate, passed away at the age of 85 on Saturday. His agent, David Foster, confirmed the news and paid tribute to Oddie’s multifaceted career and enduring impact.
Oddie gained national recognition for his work on BBC nature programmes such as Springwatch and Autumnwatch, where he shared his love for birdwatching and the environment. Foster described him as "the country's best-loved birder" who inspired audiences to appreciate and protect the natural world.
From Comedy to Conservation
Born in Birmingham, Oddie’s early passion for birdwatching eventually shaped his professional life. He initially rose to fame through his involvement with the Cambridge Footlights and later as part of the comedy trio The Goodies, alongside Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor. The group achieved widespread popularity in the 1970s, including chart success with their hit song "The Funky Gibbon," which supported wildlife conservation efforts.
After stepping back from comedy, Oddie dedicated himself to wildlife broadcasting and conservation. He contributed to major environmental organizations including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, and the Worldwide Fund for Nature.
Advocate for Mental Health
Oddie was open about his struggles with bipolar disorder, diagnosed in 2009 following a difficult period after leaving Springwatch. He spoke candidly about his mental health challenges, including hospitalisation and suicide attempts, crediting his wife Laura’s unwavering support for his recovery.
He is survived by his wife Laura and three daughters: Rosie, Kate, and Bonnie. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
David Foster reflected on his long friendship and professional relationship with Oddie, saying, "It was an honour and a privilege to represent him. I will miss him terribly." Graeme Garden remains the sole surviving member of The Goodies following the death of Tim Brooke-Taylor in 2020.
