Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has dismissed efforts to revive the Azimio la Umoja coalition, asserting it lacks the capacity to defeat President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
In an interview on August 4, 2026, Amisi described Azimio as a failed alliance following its unsuccessful bid in the 2022 polls. He emphasized that President Ruto is a seasoned politician who cannot be toppled by what he termed a "guinea pig experiment." Instead, he called for a united and well-planned opposition strategy.
"Azimio is a failed coalition; you can’t remove Ruto with Azimio. Removing Ruto is not a guinea pig experiment; you must be very intentional," Amisi stated.
Azimio's Recent Developments
The remarks came shortly after an Azimio la Umoja meeting led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka at the SKM Command Centre in Karen, Nairobi. The coalition welcomed new members including the Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP), Democratic Party (DP), and Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP), as well as the return of Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K).
Additionally, Jubilee's deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i was appointed to Azimio’s National Executive Committee, signaling attempts to strengthen the coalition's leadership.
Opposition Divisions on Azimio's Future
While Kalonzo Musyoka advocates for retaining Azimio as the opposition vehicle for 2027, citing limited time for forming a new coalition, other leaders like People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua oppose its revival. Karua has labeled Azimio a "sinking ship" and encourages the opposition to explore new political directions.
Amisi also expressed conditional support for Azimio’s return, stating he would back the coalition only if Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is chosen as its presidential candidate, underscoring the need for fresh leadership to mount a credible challenge against President Ruto.
