Celtic launched their campaign to retain the Scottish Premiership crown with a hard-fought 1-0 home victory against Dundee on Monday.
The only goal came in the 52nd minute when Swedish midfielder Benjamin Nygren, Celtic's top scorer last season with 21 goals, headed in a cross from Kieran Tierney. This marked Nygren's first goal of the new season.
Speaking after the match, Celtic manager Martin O'Neill emphasised the importance of securing the win despite a less-than-fluent performance. "We created several chances but lacked intensity," he said, describing the game as a typical season opener.
Before kickoff, Celtic captain Callum McGregor proudly displayed the champions flag in honour of the club's 14th Scottish title in 15 years and their fifth consecutive league triumph.
O'Neill, who was appointed permanently after leading the team to a domestic double last season, is keen to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming Champions League play-off against Austria's LASK. He acknowledged challenges in the transfer market, noting, "Quality costs and we're doing our best to bring in new players before the European fixtures."
The match also saw debuts for Colombian striker Camilo Duran and Danish forward Kasper Hogh, signed from Bodo/Glimt for a club-record fee.
Celtic dominated possession but struggled to convert chances, with Dundee goalkeeper Owen Goodman and substitute Viljami Sinisalo making important saves. McGregor came close to doubling the lead late on but hit the post.
The victory sets a positive tone for Celtic's title defence, though the performance highlighted areas needing improvement as the season progresses.
