Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has made a notable return to national politics, appearing at a pivotal Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition meeting on August 3, 2026. This marks her first high-profile public engagement in several months.

The meeting, held at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi and chaired by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, focused on restructuring the opposition alliance in preparation for the 2027 General Election. Ngilu, who leads the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), one of Azimio’s key parties, was among senior leaders present.

Major Coalition Reorganisation Announced

Kalonzo announced comprehensive changes aimed at strengthening Azimio’s position. The coalition welcomed former Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’i and Peter Munya, along with former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, into the Azimio Council.

Additionally, invitations were extended to several political parties to join the coalition:

  • Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) led by Eugene Wamalwa
  • Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP) led by Governor Kawira Mwagaza
  • People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Omingo Maara
  • Democratic Party (DP) led by Speaker JB Muturi

Kalonzo also revealed ongoing engagements with other parties, including the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), People’s Liberation Party (PLP), United Green Movement (UGM), and the upcoming Linda Mwananchi party.

Ngilu’s Renewed Political Engagement

While Ngilu has been active behind the scenes in opposition consultations since stepping down from elective office in 2022, her public appearances have been limited. Her presence at this high-level meeting underscores her continued influence within Azimio’s leadership.

Earlier in April 2026, she met with Kalonzo as part of efforts to revive and restructure the coalition following the 2025 death of former opposition leader Raila Odinga. Kalonzo has since taken over leadership, driving a broad coalition-building strategy.

Azimio’s Strategy Ahead of 2027

The coalition is undergoing a significant transformation amid shifting opposition dynamics. Discussions are ongoing about potentially rebranding Azimio to better position itself against President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
