Chelsea have completed the signing of seasoned striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton in a transfer valued at around £5 million ($6.7 million). The 35-year-old forward has committed to a two-year contract and will join manager Xabi Alonso's squad for their upcoming pre-season tour.
Welbeck's arrival marks a departure from Chelsea's recent trend of recruiting younger talent aimed at long-term development or resale. This is the first time since 2022 that the club has paid a transfer fee for a player over 26, recalling the acquisition of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at age 33.

Manager Xabi Alonso targeted Welbeck to bring valuable experience to a squad that struggled last season, finishing 10th in the Premier League. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward impressed at Brighton, netting 13 goals in 37 league appearances last term and 10 in the previous season. He holds 42 caps for England.
Welbeck's signing raises questions about the futures of Chelsea's current forwards, including Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, and Marc Guiu, following underwhelming performances.
This transfer continues a pattern of players moving from Brighton to Chelsea, following recent arrivals such as Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez, and Marc Cucurella, who departed for Real Madrid this summer.

Welbeck spent six years at Brighton after joining from Watford in 2020, becoming the club's all-time leading top-flight goalscorer with 51 goals and 18 assists. Brighton chairman Tony Bloom praised Welbeck's contributions, highlighting his impact on key moments and his leadership within the squad.
