A student from Chuka University, Hesbon Mauti Thomas, has denied charges of using offensive language against President William Ruto and members of his family. The case is scheduled for a full hearing at Milimani Law Courts.
Initially pleading guilty, Mauti changed his plea to not guilty before Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo. The prosecution alleges that on June 25, 2026, Mauti posted a TikTok video containing derogatory remarks about President Ruto, his son George Ruto, and one of the President's daughters. The video was reportedly recorded during a Linda Mwananchi rally in Keumbu, Kisii County.
Prosecutors argue that the remarks could incite a breach of the peace, violating Section 94(1) of the Penal Code. Mauti was arrested on July 21 and released on a Sh5,000 cash bail paid by lawyer Danstan Omari.
Omari explained in court that Mauti initially pleaded guilty out of fear of being denied bail before receiving legal counsel. The lawyer is representing the student pro bono and highlighted that Mauti is financially dependent on church support while pursuing his education.
The court will hear evidence from the prosecution to determine whether the alleged statements amount to offensive conduct likely to disrupt public order. Mauti remains out on bail as the trial proceeds.
