A student from Chuka University, Hesbon Mauti Thomas, has formally denied allegations of using offensive language against President William Ruto and members of his family on social media.
Mauti initially pleaded guilty but changed his plea to not guilty before Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo at Milimani Law Courts, where the case will now proceed to a substantive hearing.
Details of the Allegations
The prosecution claims that on June 25, 2026, Mauti posted a video on his TikTok account containing derogatory remarks targeting President Ruto, his son George Ruto, and one of the President’s daughters. The video was reportedly recorded during a Linda Mwananchi rally in Keumbu, Kisii County.
Authorities allege the remarks could incite a breach of the peace, violating Section 94(1) of the Penal Code.
Legal Proceedings and Bail
- Mauti was arrested on July 21 and released on a Sh5,000 cash bail, which was paid by lawyer Danstan Omari.
- Omari, representing Mauti pro bono, explained that the student initially pleaded guilty out of fear of being denied bail but changed his plea after receiving legal advice.
- The lawyer also noted that Mauti is financially dependent on church support and has no personal income.
