Claire Nabimanya, a 22-year-old woman, tragically drowned in a private swimming pool at a villa in Phuket, Thailand, following a night out with an Indian tourist.
Incident Details
The incident occurred around 4:00 am when Nabimanya and the man, who had met the previous day, entered the pool after consuming alcohol at an entertainment venue on Bangla Road. The Indian tourist told police that Nabimanya was not a confident swimmer and struggled before submerging underwater.
He attempted to rescue her but was unsuccessful and left the pool to seek help, initially trying to call Thailand’s emergency police line (191), which was unreachable. He then contacted the medical emergency hotline (1669), which dispatched responders.
Emergency Response and Investigation
- Emergency services received a distress call at approximately 4:30 am and reported the drowning at 5:15 am.
- Kamala Police recovered Nabimanya's body from the roughly two-metre-deep pool and transferred it to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
- Authorities noted the absence of lifesaving equipment near the pool and found no signs of a struggle inside the villa.
- The Indian man underwent questioning and drug testing as part of the investigation.
