Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has issued a stern warning to critics within the club, saying he will expose those working against him before resigning if the negative campaign persists.
Speaking from Kigali during the 2026 Cecafa Kagame Cup, Akonnor expressed frustration over a smear campaign he claims is being orchestrated by certain individuals inside the club. The Ghanaian coach, who led Gor Mahia to the FKF Premier League title last season, said he will no longer tolerate the undermining behavior.
Pressure Mounts After Recent Defeat
The tension escalated following Gor Mahia's 0-1 loss to Uganda's Vipers SC, a match that came after an impressive 5-0 victory over APR FC. Despite the strong start to the tournament, some club officials and fans have criticized Akonnor’s team selections and questioned his approach.
"We lost only one match, and immediately the negative talk began," Akonnor said. "I am not afraid of being fired. If they continue, I will expose them publicly and then leave." He added that he has already informed the club chairman about the situation, emphasizing the need to focus on preparing the team for the upcoming season and the CAF Champions League.
Internal Calls for Coaching Change
Sources reveal that a senior official within Gor Mahia is advocating for Akonnor’s dismissal, aiming to replace him with another foreign coach ahead of next season’s continental and domestic campaigns. This official has reportedly launched an online campaign and rallied some supporters to back the move.
Gor Mahia faces CF Garde Republicaine/SIAF later today in their final Group A match at Cecafa, with a win securing a quarter-final spot and a chance to end a 41-year wait for the regional title.
