Political leaders from Kenya's Coast region have initiated a campaign to double registered voters ahead of the 2027 General Election. The goal is to increase the current voter roll from about two million to four million.

The campaign was unveiled during public meetings in Kwale County's Kinango, Lunga Lunga, and Msambweni constituencies. Key figures including Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani, and several MPs encouraged residents to prepare for the upcoming voter registration exercise.

Boosting Political Influence

At a gathering in Kinondo Ward's Kiungoni Stadium, Kingi highlighted that the Coast's registered voters do not reflect its population size, limiting the region's sway in national decision-making. He stressed that increasing voter numbers would strengthen the region's voice and bargaining power in government.

Kingi urged all eligible but unregistered residents to seize the opportunity to register, emphasizing that active voter participation will be crucial in shaping the Coast's political future.

Preparations and Unity Calls

Cabinet Secretary Mvurya called on young people and others who have turned 18 but lack national identity cards to apply promptly, as possession of an ID is mandatory for voter registration. He also appealed for political unity in the region, encouraging support for President William Ruto's re-election bid, arguing that a united vote would enhance the Coast's national standing.

Governor Achani reinforced this message, citing ongoing national government projects in Kwale such as the Kwale-Kinango road, Shimoni Port development, affordable housing in Matuga and Diani, and the Marine Centre at Chitsakamatsa. She noted that key government appointments held by Coast leaders, including Kingi as Senate Speaker, Mvurya as Cabinet Secretary, and Hassan Joho as Cabinet Secretary for the Blue Economy, reflect growing regional representation.

Local Leaders Rally Support

Msambweni MP Feisal Bader and Matuga MP Kassim Tandaza also addressed residents, urging voter registration and backing President Ruto's campaign. The meetings were attended by other officials including Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga and local MCAs.

This coordinated effort underscores the Coast leaders’ commitment to enhancing political engagement and influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
