The Milimani Law Courts have ordered that the two main suspects in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso remain in custody for an additional 21 days as investigations proceed.
The suspects, a mother and her son, are being held separately; the mother at Kilimani Police Station and her son at Kileleshwa Police Station. The court emphasized that this arrangement aims to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and prevent interference with witnesses.
Presiding over the case, the judge highlighted that the extended detention also serves to protect the suspects from potential public harm while the court determines their guilt or innocence. Their legal team, led by lawyer Danstan Omari, consented to the extension. The case is scheduled for mention on August 25.
Related Vehicle Theft Case
On the same day, the daughter of the first suspect and another individual appeared in court after being arrested for possession of a Range Rover allegedly stolen from property linked to the murder investigation. They did not enter pleas as the prosecution requested 21 days to complete investigations. Their defense lawyers questioned the delay, noting the theft was reported months prior.
The court ordered that both remain in custody until August 4 pending forensic investigations related to the vehicle.
Background
Dr Victoria Mutiso, a clinical psychologist and head of research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation, was fatally shot on July 29 while commuting in Nairobi. Authorities suspect the killing is connected to a long-standing, multi-billion-shilling matrimonial property dispute involving her family.
Investigators are exploring possible links between Dr Mutiso's murder and the 2025 killing of a city lawyer who had represented parties involved in the same property dispute.
