Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of orchestrating a shift in the Mt Kenya community’s political stance, abandoning their earlier commitment to support President William Ruto for two constitutional terms.

Speaking after a Sunday Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Cathedral in Meru Town on August 2, 2026, CS Ruku said the two leaders had previously assured Kenyans nationwide that after Uhuru’s 10-year tenure, the Mt Kenya region would back Ruto similarly. He questioned why they are now rallying opposition against Ruto before his term ends.

Ruku stated: "They went across the country asking Kenyans to support this arrangement. Why are they now making the people of Mt Kenya appear as though they cannot honour a promise they made before the nation?"

He accused Uhuru and Gachagua of spreading false claims that the Kenya Kwanza government is sidelining Mt Kenya, describing these narratives as divisive and self-serving.

CS Ruku also criticized Gachagua for turning his personal political challenges into communal issues following his removal from office by Members of Parliament, which Ruku attributed to Gachagua’s failure to fulfill constitutional duties.

He emphasized that President Ruto maintains strong ties with Mt Kenya, highlighting that key ministries and government positions are held by leaders from Mt Kenya West.

Furthermore, Ruku condemned attempts by Gachagua and some Mt Kenya West leaders to undermine Deputy President Rigathi Kindiki through persistent criticism, while simultaneously urging residents to abandon the Kenya Kwanza administration.

On Mt Kenya East’s stance, Ruku affirmed: "Mt Kenya East will remain in government. We shall continue supporting President Ruto because our priority is development, unity and ensuring our people benefit from government programmes."

He cited development projects underway in Mt Kenya East, supported by data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), and urged residents to reject leaders promoting misinformation for personal gain.

CS Ruku concluded by expressing confidence that the Mt Kenya region will overwhelmingly support President Ruto’s re-election bid in the 2027 General Election.
