Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has rapidly gained recognition as a staunch defender of President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in the politically significant Mt Kenya region.
Known for addressing contentious issues that many senior officials avoid, Ruku has positioned himself at the forefront of debates surrounding the region's political divisions and succession dynamics.
Defending Kindiki and Challenging Critics
Ruku has publicly countered criticism directed at Deputy President Kindiki, notably from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He emphasized Kindiki’s stature, stating, “Kindiki is not a son of a lesser God.” Ruku accused Gachagua of promoting divisive politics and attempting to hold Mt Kenya “at ransom” following his impeachment.
Responding to Gachagua’s late calls for unity with Mt Kenya East leaders, Ruku dismissed the overture, asserting there were no genuine appointments from Gachagua’s office that reflected regional inclusivity.
Ruku’s criticism extends beyond Gachagua. When Cooperative Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya questioned Kindiki’s role ahead of the 2027 elections, Ruku told him to focus on his duties and declared that no one would displace the Deputy President.
He further suggested that Kindiki’s supporters might align with ODM if necessary to protect the Deputy President’s political future.
A Metaphor in a Name
Interestingly, Ruku’s surname means firewood in the Kimbeere language, symbolizing something that sustains a fire rather than ignites it. This metaphor aptly describes his political role as a steady force maintaining the Kenya Kwanza administration’s messaging during challenging times.
Unlike fiery rhetoric common in politics, Ruku’s calm and measured communication style has made him a reliable spokesperson for the government’s position on sensitive issues.
As the 2027 General Election approaches, Ruku’s visibility and influence in defending the administration and shaping Mt Kenya’s political discourse are expected to increase.
