Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has defended the arrest of Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia, stating that the legislator's statements were serious enough to require police action.
In an interview with Kameme TV on Monday, August 3, 2026, CS Ruku compared remarks made by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and those by Kaguchia. He admitted he could not understand Duale's Somali-language comments but insisted Kaguchia's statements clearly crossed a line.
CS Ruku said: "I have listened to Aden Duale’s remarks, and although I don’t understand Somali, I still can’t tell what he was saying. But I have listened carefully to Kaguchia’s remarks, and they absolutely should have warranted his arrest."
Details of Kaguchia's Arrest
John Kaguchia was arrested on Monday morning after spending the previous night at Royal Media Services (RMS) premises. He had sought refuge there following reports that police were waiting to apprehend him.
Video footage obtained by People Daily Digital showed the MP being taken into custody at the RMS offices. This occurred hours after Kaguchia raised alarm over heavily armed, hooded security officers surrounding the media station in an apparent attempt to arrest him.
Opposition leaders and lawyers remained at the RMS premises overnight, accusing security agencies of intimidation tactics. Kaguchia described the security presence as masked and heavily armed men with no uniformed police visible.
Investigation and Political Context
The Mukurwe-ini MP is under investigation for inciteful remarks he allegedly made during a political event held on August 1, 2026, in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County.
In early Monday social media updates, Kaguchia said the police operation unfolded shortly after he appeared on a local vernacular TV show. He also claimed that police had set up roadblocks around the RMS studios intending to arrest him immediately after the broadcast.
Kaguchia stated: "After my Kiririmbi show this evening, a contingent of police have surrounded Royal Media Studios and erected roadblocks with the intention of arresting me! I will not be intimidated whatsoever."
