A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology reveals that consuming one avocado each day may help reduce the risk of heart disease among adults with obesity.

The research analyzed data from 786 US adults aged 25 and older with abdominal obesity. Participants were split into two groups: one maintained their usual diet and activity, while the other incorporated one avocado daily for six months.

Key Findings

  • Daily avocado consumption led to a significant drop in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle levels, which carry cholesterol and contribute to artery plaque buildup.
  • LDL particle levels decreased by 49 nanomoles per litre among those eating avocados, correlating with an estimated 4% reduction in heart disease risk.
  • The benefits were consistent regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, or body size.
  • Adding avocados did not result in weight loss or reduced waist circumference.

Lead author Janhavi Damani noted that while the 4% risk reduction is modest compared to broader dietary improvements, it represents a manageable dietary change. "Including avocados daily could be a practical first step for improving heart health, especially for people with obesity," she said.

The study emphasizes that this dietary adjustment should complement, not replace, more comprehensive lifestyle changes for optimal cardiovascular health.
