The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended a man suspected of orchestrating a land fraud scheme involving a one-acre plot in Nairobi's upscale Muthaiga estate, valued at approximately Ksh12 million.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation at a Westlands hotel, with investigations initially triggered by a complaint filed at the DCI Starehe office regarding suspicious dealings linked to the property. The case was subsequently escalated to the DCI's Land Fraud Investigations Unit.
Authorities allege that the suspect, acting through his company, produced and utilized a counterfeit Certificate of Title to assert ownership over the land.
After concluding investigations, the DCI forwarded the case to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which authorized formal charges. The suspect faces accusations including making a false document, obtaining registration by false pretences, uttering a false document, and providing false information to a public officer. He is currently awaiting arraignment.
This arrest highlights the growing challenges Kenya faces with land fraud, where buyers lose substantial sums due to forged documents and fraudulent transactions. Recently, a Nairobi-based advocate was also detained for allegedly misappropriating over Ksh49 million entrusted for a land purchase.
The DCI urged the public to diligently verify land ownership, title deeds, and survey records with relevant authorities before engaging in property transactions to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
