The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended a young man from Wanguru Town, Mwea in Kirinyaga County, over allegations of publishing inflammatory content on Facebook.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the investigative agency announced the arrest via its official X account, stating that the individual is suspected of sharing posts amounting to hate speech and ethnic contempt.
While the DCI did not reveal the exact nature of the posts, it confirmed that the charges fall under the National Cohesion and Integration Act, which addresses hate speech and ethnic contempt offenses.
The suspect is currently under investigation and is expected to appear in court as legal proceedings continue.
DCI's Stance on Online Hate Speech
The arrest comes amid increased monitoring of social media platforms, especially during heightened political activity and public discourse.
The DCI emphasized that although freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed, it does not permit actions that promote division, hatred, or threaten national unity.
"Those who abuse digital platforms to undermine peace and cohesion will face the full force of the law without exception," the agency stated.
