Authorities investigating the killing of clinical psychologist and researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso have identified a Toyota Prado as a critical lead in the case.
Detectives believe the vehicle was used to block the taxi Dr Mutiso was boarding moments before gunmen on a motorcycle shot her three times in Nairobi’s Upper Hill. The attack is suspected to have been premeditated.
Connection to Land Dispute
The Prado has been linked to a vehicle stolen during a February demolition at Dr Mutiso’s property in Mlolongo, Machakos County. Police were enforcing a court order to demolish structures on approximately 20 acres owned by Dr Mutiso when the Toyota Prado was reportedly taken.
One suspect involved in the murder case had earlier presented the demolition notice at Mlolongo Police Station, where Dr Mutiso subsequently filed a complaint questioning the demolition’s legality. This complaint remains under investigation.
Threats and Escalation
- On July 7, Dr Mutiso reported being threatened by three men on a motorcycle at Kilimani Police Station.
- Her murder occurred three weeks later on July 29 while she was en route to work.
Investigators are exploring whether the threats and the shooting are connected and if the land dispute motivated the attack.
Official Findings and Ongoing Investigation
Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed Dr Mutiso died from severe bleeding caused by three gunshot wounds—two to the head and one to the upper back.
Two suspects, a mother and son, have been arraigned as detectives continue to gather evidence and follow multiple leads in the case.
