Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has arrived in Entebbe, Uganda, to represent President William Ruto at the 2nd Extraordinary Summit of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
In a statement posted on his X account on July 31, 2026, Kindiki confirmed his participation in the high-level meeting aimed at addressing regional peace, security, and the future of the AU-led mission in Somalia.
Summit Focuses on Security and Sustainable Financing
The summit convenes Heads of State, senior officials, and regional stakeholders to evaluate AUSSOM’s mandate implementation, operational progress, and the financial challenges undermining its effectiveness.
With the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) underway, discussions will prioritize sustainable funding mechanisms. Despite the United Nations Security Council endorsing a hybrid funding approach combining UN-assessed contributions and donor support, funding shortfalls remain a pressing issue.
Kenya’s Role in Regional Peace Efforts
Kenya continues to be a key troop contributor and a pivotal player in peacekeeping and counterterrorism operations in the Horn of Africa, particularly against the Al-Shabaab insurgency.
The summit also aims to strengthen collaboration among troop-contributing countries, Somalia’s Federal Government, the African Union, and international partners to enhance regional security.
Outcomes from the Entebbe meeting are expected to influence AUSSOM’s strategic direction, reinforce regional security cooperation, and support Somalia’s gradual assumption of full national security responsibilities, fostering lasting peace in the region.
