Former Harambee Starlets captain and FIFA Women’s Football Development expert, Doreen Nabwire, has appealed to Kenyan football fans to remain patient and supportive of the national women’s team following their 4-0 defeat to Morocco in the opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco.
Speaking from her office in Salé, Nabwire acknowledged the strength of the host nation, describing Morocco as a well-prepared and top-ranked side with ambitions beyond Africa, including qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Despite the heavy loss, Nabwire expressed confidence in Kenya’s ability to rebound in their remaining group matches against Senegal and Algeria. She emphasized that the team earned their place through hard work and still has a chance to advance if they secure maximum points in the upcoming games.
Growth and Challenges in Kenyan Women’s Football
Nabwire highlighted the rapid development of women's football in Kenya and across Africa, urging teams to raise their standards and aim for global competitions like the World Cup. She also pointed out that success requires addressing issues beyond the pitch, including infrastructure, coaching, and players’ allowances, which impact motivation and performance.
Reflecting on her pioneering career as the first Kenyan woman to play professional football in Europe, Nabwire stressed the importance of creating a supportive environment that allows players to focus fully on their game.

In response to social media backlash following the defeat, Nabwire defended the players, reminding fans that losses are part of sport. She urged supporters to learn from mistakes and support the team’s efforts to improve.
Kenya is scheduled to face Senegal on July 30 at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off at 8:00 PM Kenyan time. Morocco will play Algeria later the same day.
