The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is currently battling its largest Ebola outbreak on record, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). As of July 30, there have been 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths, marking a fatality rate of 44%.

This outbreak, declared on May 15, 2026, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which differs from previous strains and currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. Efforts to develop vaccines are underway in the United Kingdom and Singapore.

Escalating Transmission and Challenges

The WHO highlighted that the outbreak is intensifying, with the past week recording a peak of 567 new cases and 296 deaths. The rapid spread is attributed to factors including ongoing insecurity, population displacement, and cross-border movements, which hinder response operations and elevate the risk of further spread.

Geographic Spread and Regional Impact

  • The outbreak’s epicenter is Ituri province in northeastern DR Congo, bordering Uganda and South Sudan.
  • It has also reached North and South Kivu provinces, areas affected by conflict involving the Rwanda-backed M23 armed group.
  • Beyond DR Congo, 20 cases have been reported in Uganda and one in France; two DR Congo patients were treated in Germany.

The WHO emphasized that insecurity and mobility in the region complicate containment efforts and increase the likelihood of the virus spreading geographically.

Ongoing Vaccine Development

On July 30, the WHO announced that the most promising vaccine candidate is being developed in Singapore, while clinical trials for another vaccine have commenced in the UK.

Since its discovery, Ebola has caused approximately 15,000 deaths across Africa over the past five decades, spreading through contact with bodily fluids.
